Rhode Island is welcoming rooftop solar with open arms. This past MOnday, Rhode Island opened up to America’s largest solar provider (SolarCity). As more and more states begin to see the benefit of cleaner air, less water use, and reduced a largely reduced carbon footprint, the popularity and widespread installation of residential solar will increase exponentially.

The state has made it possible for residents to purchase their own system. Since cash upfront is a large investment, financing options are available. This means RI residents can purchase a system with no money down and simply pay for their system by paying for a lower rate of electricity.

Customers with National grid are likely to see a 20%+ savings in their monthly electric bill. Not only this, customers will finally be able to simplify the way they pay for electricity. Take a look at your bill for a moment. You will see a list of random charges that you have no clue what they are for. On my bill, I have a competition charge. What the heck is a competition charge? On your solar bill, you will simply see 1 single rate multiplied by your energy production equaling your monthly bill.

Battery Backups?

You may have seen the hype about battery backup offered by Tesla. There seems to be a lot of confusion in what they do and what they are used for.

The first confusion is the announced price. While Tesla announced they are $3500.00, this is just for the battery itself. If you want a tesla powerwall with no wiring, inverter, or installation, that’s what you get for $3500.00 plus tax. I do not know about you, but I am no electrician. I want installation, warranty, maintenance, and monitoring. This is why you see the price difference between what is advertised and what third parties are offering.

Many are under the impression that the battery is used to tier shave, supplement power, or remove you from the grid completely. The battery is simply used as backup power only. If the grid goes down, you are still able to maintain the flow of electricity to your home. Tied with a solar system, adding a battery also means that now your solar system will continue to provide a continuous flow of electricity to your home during a grid outage as well.

The batteries are not meant to power your entire home. They are built to (each) power up to four 20 amp, 120V circuits. You can backup more circuits by purchasing more batteries.

While the batteries are available for sale right now, you are looking to October for possible installation. This is due to the high demand after the announcement. Turn around times will become quicker as demand balances and especially after Tesla’s new gigafactory in  central Nevada opens for operations.
